We breed rare American Bashkir Sporthorses for size, conformation, movement, temperament, and hardiness; and take the time to train our horses gradually, preparing them both physically and mentally to begin their careers as riding partners and athletes who will shine in competition. Our horses live naturally in large pastures with run in sheds; our main herd spends more than 12 hours a day time crossing small open fields, woodlands, wet areas, and navigating steep hillsides. While our horses learn to tie at a very young age, and are groomed and handled on a regular basis; their training does not begin until the winter before they turn four years of age. They begin their schooling very gradually on the longe, and progress to work on long lines before they are backed usually late spring to early summer. When they have developed a degree of balance and a clear understanding of the rider's aids, they begin cross training on our trail network. While our horses school with cavaletti early in their training (first at the walk); light jumping over obstacles does not begin until the age of five or six, and that is over low natural obstacles on our tail network.
The American Bashkir is prized for: substantial and durable feet paralleled by the wild horse; substantial bone; handiness over daunting terrain; being very easy keepers; a trot that you can sit to and enjoy for hours: and a temperament that is loving, curious, and eager to please- resulting in a horse that is a pleasure to train, ride, and spend time with. We are crossing competition quality American Bashkir with Lusitano and Warmblood horses to: maintain the prized hardiness and temperament of the American Bashkir; to achieve optimal conformation, athletic ability and size; and to avoid "extreme curl" (a genetic trait characterized in part by seasonal shedding of the mane and/ or tail).
Our training program is rooted in natural horsemanship, classical dressage, and trail skills; a foundation of cross training to prepare young horses for versatility, longevity, and success in any future discipline. Our clients in both the US and Canada, love the sensitivity in our mounts; we take pride in creating responsive "dance partners" -- the wonderful fusion of art and horses. Whether you are looking for: a talented equine partner with a strong early foundation; a 2013 breeding for an American Bashkir x Lusitano or American Bashkir x Warmblood foal; a boarding facility in the mountains; a day of competition; riding instruction; or to enroll your horse into a training program specific to your needs -- we invite you to our facility in the Adirondack Mountains of Jay, NY.
